If your story beast had a form, what would it be?

A beetle, but a changeable beast of a beetle -- because story changes us as we need to be changed, not as we want to be changed. Iridescent when we need to fool the things that will consume us, or camouflaged against a background; bright when we want to scare them off; story gives us jaws to eat and fight, weapons to resist, protection, speed, wit, wisdom. There should be as many types of story in the world as there are types of beetle.
